self armature

self-armature is hybrid film/performance/sculpture and ritualized protest of self-arming through the materiality of the tactile apparatus/medium of 16mm film and clay. self-armature iii (At the Los Angeles Police Academy rock garden above the shooting range), 2019 combines 16mm film and audio from the Los Angeles Police academy, superimposed with 16mm from the Los Angeles Police Museum. In using clay armor and camera to initiate spectatorship, self-armature challenges surveillance dynamics to look at violence as a performative structure, rooted in the very important question of whether or not self-protection and autonomy are futile during an era of mass data surveillance and state monopoly of violence.
